Kid Cole & Klay was a pilot created by Pete Candeland for Cartoon Network Europe. This was my very first professional freelance animation gig from way back in 2007! This job completely pushed me out of my comfort zones. For starters, I was hired as a background painter which I had never done before. Also, at that time I was still using a coloring method where I would paint everything in black and white and then add color afterwards. It was really constraining, and by the end of this job I realized I had to find a new way to work.

This job was also notable as the first time I worked with my long-time collaborator Stephane Coedel. Stephane directed the title sequence you see above. I got really excited from working with him about the potential of creating animated paintings in AfterFX, and we’re still exploring the possibilities today!

There was a whole pilot episode animatic produced along with this title sequence, but unfortunately it never saw the light of day, along with many other series produced at CN Europe.
